As an African-American male who grew up in a single-parent household in the Delta region of
Arkansas (The City of Pine Bluff to be exact), I could have succumbed to various negative statistics. Nonetheless, I persevered!
My mother, two older sisters, and I all lived with my grandparents. My grandfather and grandmother only had an 8th grade education but were some of the smartest people you would’ve ever met. My grandfather worked as a factory worker and janitor helping my grandmother raise 12 children on $5,000 a year! Talk about a hard worker!
My mother, who worked as a janitor and maid for her entire career, made sure that I had a firm foundation so that I could succeed.
Collectively, they taught me the meaning of hard work, dedication, and daring to be different. I took what I learned and made a way for myself. In fact, as an undergraduate student, I paid my way through school by working full-time as a janitor!
Since then, I became the first in my family and the first African American person in my doctoral program to earn a PhD! I am eager to provide your organization with the same of dedication and resilience!
